University of Colorado School of Medicine Presents: Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit

The University of Colorado School of Medicine will be hosting the second annual Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit on May 4th. Please share this exciting event with your networks. This event is free and open to everyone but is specifically targeted for elementary – college age students and their families of all races, ethnicities, and nationalities. Please share the flyer below to spread the word!

Additionally, we will be hosting a community fair that will allow the event attendees to connect and learn more about the organizations near their homes. The community fair will take place from 12:30pm to 1:30pm and you are more than welcome to stay for the remainder of the speaker sessions. If you are interested in hosting a table during the community fair, please complete the signup form here.

I know times are challenging, but I’d like to invite you to help to share your light and inspiration with some future docs who are alumni of the Children’s Hospital Colorado MC2 (Medical Career Collaborative Program).  Please see details below and feel free to direct any questions to me. 

Children’s Hospital Colorado is excited to partner once again with the University of Colorado Department of Pediatrics for the Celebration of Difference Week to host Dinner with Docs for physicians and alumni of the Medical Career Collaborative (MC2) program (a program that supports youth from underrepresented backgrounds in their pursuit of a healthcare career). This event offers a wonderful opportunity for both MC2 alumni and healthcare providers to connect. Alumni will have the chance to meet with physicians and providers, hear about their career journeys, and network, while providers can engage with a remarkable group of aspiring healthcare professionals who are eager to learn and build connections and learn from those who do the work they hope to do someday.

PAID externship for medical students from underrepresented backgrounds - Robert A. Winn Clinical Investigator Pathway Program

The Robert A. Winn Clinical Investigator Pathway Program (Winn CIPP) is part of a $114 million initiative funded by the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, Gilead Sciences, and Amgen. This national program aims to increase diversity in clinical trials and transform the clinical research landscape.

Winn CIPP is a 6-week summer externship offering medical students from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine and disadvantaged circumstances the chance to experience and engage in clinical research conducted in community-based settings. The program's goal is to expose students to career pathways in clinical research, particularly emphasizing community-oriented research focused on inclusion, equity, and diversity in clinical and translational research.

Key details:

  • Program Periods: June 3rd - July 12th, 2024 (Group 1) and June 10th - July 19th, 2024 (Group 2)

  • Locations: Various cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and others (subject to change)

  • Stipend: $7,500 for participants

Students will receive training in clinical research, community engagement, and leadership development during the program.

Raw Material, showcases selections from over 25 years of NedRa Bonds’ narrative quilts, providing an autobiographical declaration of Black Womanhood coupled with reflections on racial and social injustice, intimate encounters with the medical establishment, and her family legacy. 

7,000 Babies, highlights the legacy of Justina Ford, MD (1871-1952), the first licensed Black female physician in Colorado and her extraordinary efforts to care for Denver’s communities over the span of 50 years. Both exhibits provide inspiring messages of determinedness and resilience in the face of race and gender inequities. 

Both exhibits are now open for viewing and will be on display until October 31st.

My name is Jordan Nelson, and I am a 3rd year medical student that is a part of the CSTAHR organization (Community and Students Together Against Healthcare Racism). We are getting ready to host our annual Greg White Lecture on November 15th. The Greg White Lecture was created in partnership with the Department of Family Medicine with a goal of finding topics that relate to the black community and health disparities, guided by our CSTAHR community members.

Our speaker this year is Dr. Elaine Nsoesie, professor of public health at Boston University.

In this engaging presentation, Dr. Nsoesie will:

  1. Discuss health data and algorithmic bias

  2. Highlight how data and AI can be used to advance racial health equity

  3. Hear the audience’s perspective on data, algorithms, and racial health equity

My name is Noble Gough and I am the DEI Professional within the CU School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

As you may have heard, the Black Youth Summit scheduled to take place last Fall was postponed until this Spring and we are so excited to bring the state of Colorado's first Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit to CU Anschutz! As such, the School of Medicine's Office of Diversity and Inclusion would like to formally re-invite you to participate with a booth in our community fair.

The Summit will take place on the CU Anschutz Medical campus on Saturday, April 15th from 8 AM to 5 PM. We will host the community fair from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, which will allow the event attendees to connect and learn more about the organizations near their homes. The P/SL Mini Medical University is a one-of-a-kind learning experience for high school students interested in learning more about careers in medicine. This action-packed, hands-on educational program focuses on experiential activities as well as direct interaction with staff and physicians.

Come participate in these amazing hands-on simulation tours

Ambulance Simulations and Tour

Get the chance to see how EMTs respond to a scene and stabilize a patient. Get inside the

ambulance to learn about the equipment, methods, and supplies used by paramedics and

EMTs.

Pediatric Simulations

Tour our Mobile Training Center simulation vehicle and receive the hands-on

stabilizing techniques used to create better outcomes for our pediatric patients.

Casting Simulations

Learn about casts and when they are used. You and a partner will learn the step by step

process of putting a cast on and how to take it off.

Smart Operating Room Spine Surgery

Step directly inside the hospital's advanced hybrid OR. Students will learn from Dr.

Woosik Chung, Director of Spine Surgery, and his OR team about sterile procedures, the

tools used in surgery, and the technology guiding the team.

Black Youth Summit

On October 7th-8th, Black Men in White Coats is partnering with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus to present the inaugural Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit, a 2-day event for elementary, middle, and high school students. The Summit will take place at the Anschutz Medical Campus and will feature movie screenings, panelists, question-and-answer sessions, presentations from CU School of Medicine faculty and staff, and hands-on learning opportunities.

These events are open to participants from all backgrounds, elementary-college aged, and their families and there is no cost to register for either event.
